A BIA is a not-for profit organization that promotes the shared interests of commercial property owners and tenants within a specified geographical area. Established by Municipal bylaw, BIA’s are funded through a self imposed tax levy that is collected by the municipality from individual BIA members.
Under the guidance of a volunteer Board of Directors, the existence of a BIA is an opportunity for business and building owners to join together to promote and advertise their commercial district. Often BIA’s engage in and implement special events and festivals, street enhancements, business recruitment and economic development within their BIA and neighbourhoods. They also identify other opportunities for community partnerships and other programming. Section 204 of the Municipal Act, 2001 provides for the creation and operation of BIAs.
The Ottawa Street BIA is 26 years old. We are guided by a very active and enthusiastic Board of Directors who oversee the programming for the organization. We undertake beautification efforts on the street and implement advertising and marketing promotions to give Ottawa Street a brand and identity. We manage our local Farmers’ Market, operate a store-front office, assist in recruiting new businesses and implement many special events throughout the year. Our retail mix is dynamic, unique and eclectic which reflects the spirit of Hamilton and our customer base comes from all over Ontario and New York State. We are Hamilton’s destination for inspiration!
