We want our Ottawa Street Shoppers to feel inspired when they come to Ottawa Street. Our What Will You Create Today blog will focus on what inspires them and in turn, can inspire you…
Wick’d Wax Creations
203 Ottawa Street N, Hamilon, ON
Did you know that Wick’d Wax Creations is the ONLY handcrafted candle shoppe working with Organic (GMO-free) Soy wax that is Vegan friendly? Wes Fletcher has been in the candle business now for over 20 years. Candle Making is a dying art however Wes will be continuing the art by going for his Master Chandler’s Certificate/License in order to continue the trade. There are currently only 7 or so within the world and 2 of those are from Canada. He will be making himself the 3rd from Canada!
We asked Wes to create something that inspires him for our What Would You Create Today Campaign. His creation is called Fun in The Sun. Make sure to stop by his store at 203 Ottawa St N to see his creation in his shop window first hand! Check out this quick interview with Wes we did to learn more about him and his inspiration!
Ottawa Street BIA (BIA) – Are you originally from Hamilton? If not, where are you from?
Wes Fletcher (WF) – No. Originally I am from Binbrook. I moved to Hamilton at age 24 to become more independent.
BIA – What inspired you to pursue your dream of opening up your own small business?
WF – I’ve always wanted to be my own boss because of the freedom to be able to use my own creative imagination. I don’t mind working long hours and taking the time to dedicate my skills towards my creations. It’s very rewarding.
BIA – At what moment did you realize this was what you wanted to do with your life?
WF – When I was 14 I worked as a labourer scraping wax off the floor of a Honey Barn. I watched the candle maker making his creations and I couldn’t resist helping him. I’ve worked for many businesses prior to my own but like I said, there is so much to be said about being an entrepreneur.
BIA – What made you pick Ottawa St to open your store?
WF – The AWESOME vibe and the ability to be a niche market on the street. Ottawa St is fun, friendly and beautiful. The marketing strategies and the campaign that the BIA work hard to put on is very rewarding.
BIA – What was your inspiration for the What Would You Create Today project?
WF – I have created a Sand Candle Creation, it’s called Fun in the Sun.
BIA – How can this piece inspired others to do their own creations?
WF – The Sand Candle can inspire others by allowing them to create what they want without any barriers, the sky is the limit! This sand candle allows for so much creativity, there is no wrong way to show art!
