Celebrating Women on #IWD2016

International Women’s Day calls us to challenge the issues that deny women’s human rights, while celebrating those women who have worked tirelessly to create change in the past and also those who continue to move us forward today. Yesterday the Ottawa St merchants offered women the small gesture of a yellow rose to signify our utmost respect and appreciation for all women. Ottawa St is made up of over 100 small businesses, many of which are owned and operated by women. A great article was posted in the business section of the Spectator today stating that Hamilton women are still facing barriers when it comes to reaching ‘top jobs’. Fortunately we ranked 20th out of 25 of Canada’s biggest cities as the best place to be a woman. But we are not there yet. This is why International Women’s Day is so important, we need to continue to recognize women for their strengths and capabilities, we need to create a world that empowers women and teaches them to achieve their goals. Here’s to International Women’s Day everyday!

“We must carry forward the work of the women who came before us and ensure our daughters have no limits on their dreams, no obstacles to their achievements and no remaining ceilings to shatter.” – Barack Obama

“We still need international Women’s Day because some people think what Hilary wears is more controversial than what Trump says” – Olivia Wayne, Sky Sports News Reporter

“Empowering women isn’t just the right thing to do- it’s the smart thing to do.” – Barack Obama

“I can’t think of any better representation of beauty than someone who is unafraid to be herself.” – Emma Stone
