Merchant Feature: Calipan

Calipan opened at 191 Ottawa Street N on March 26th 2016 by owners William and Catalina Prado. Calipan is an Authentic Colombian Eatery that specializes in traditional meals, snacks and pastries all made in house. In addition to their traditional menu items Calipan has a small grocery section offering Colombian treats and beverages. As soon as you walk in the door you feel like family, the Prado’s kindness radiates and their passion for cooking shows in each and every dish they prepare.

Hot grab and go snacks are available at the front counter, some of the most popular items including gluten free empanadas served with house made salsa, dedos de queso (cheese fingers) and churros with Dulce de leche to name a few. Their empanadas are made with traditional corn flour filled with either chicken, beef or potatoes and fried to crispy perfection. You can also enjoy the Calentado, a typical Columbian breakfast platter served with rice, beans, fried pork belly, sweet plantain, fried egg, and arepa accompanied by a coffee for $10.99. For lunch we recommend the Colombian style hot dog topped with crushed chips, bacon bits, ketchup, pineapple and garlic sauce. Or go with the more classic Chuleta de cerdo valluna – breaded pork with white rice, fries, red kidney beans and fried plantain. You can also opt to build your own lunch; choose a main and two sides for $9.99 served with a fried plantain (add a soda for $1.00).

When asked what made them decided to open on Ottawa Street Catalina says they enjoy the diversity of the stores and restaurants on the street and were excited to be a part of the friendly business community. Catalina mentions that one of their main goals as business owners was to introduce their cultural cuisine to the area, they noticed that there wasn’t a Colombian eatery in Hamilton’s east end and they wanted to change that. The Prado’s pride themselves on creating a warm atmosphere and providing wonderful homemade meals at affordable prices.

COVID was a difficult time for Calipan, they were used to serving walk-ins and regulars in their restaurant. Business slowed down and as a response Catalina and William thought of innovative ways to serve their food during quarantine. Their full menu is now available on Uber Eats and Doordash or you can call to place and order for pickup. They have recently opened a freezer section with packs of their house made empanadas 18 pieces for $20. As well as frozen pupusas, Colombian sausage and gluten free arepas.

Located at 191 Ottawa St. N, Calipan is open Tuesday – Friday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM and Saturday 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM – Closed Sunday & Monday.
