Simply Italian Bakery opened on June 15th 2019 and was a welcomed addition to Ottawa Street. With a strong background in the food and beverage industry Nancy and Rocco Leo, owners of Café Limoncello, were excited to take on this new venture. Italian cooking is in their blood and Nancy noticed Ottawa Street was in need of an authentic Italian bakery, when the space at 212 Ottawa Street N became available Nancy knew it was meant to be.

Nancy had a vision for the bakery that involved a full transformation of the space, the inside is bright and open concept and makes you feel like you’re walking into a café in Naples. Indoor seating is being offered at a reduced capacity but COVID protocols are in place and being diligently followed by the staff. You can also opt to dine outside at one of their outdoor bistro tables.

When you first walk in you are greeted by a wall of fresh pastries, muffins, croissants and cookies, as well as a selection of house baked breads. The bread selection is perhaps what makes SIB so unique, one of Nancy’s main goals when planning to open the bakery was to bring traditional Italian bread making to the neighbourhood. She worked alongside an Italian trained bread maker to personally learn the different bread methods developed in Italy. They currently offer calabrese, sourdough, rustic pan, baguette, focaccia, brioche braids and buns, Altamura and more. The bread selection changes daily so if you’re looking for something specific, we suggest calling ahead of time to ensure it’s available.

Located at the back of the bakery is the pizza counter that comes equip with an industrial built in wood oven. Pizzas can be made to order and only take a few minutes to prepare and bake. We highly suggest watching this process, it is truly fascinating! If you’d prefer to pre-order you can call ahead anytime and arrange for a pickup.

There are a variety of pizza options to choose from but when asked what are the customer favourites Nancy says “The Margherita and The Funghi are the top picks.” The pizzas are made in a traditional Napoli style, the crust is thin and crispy yet chewy and the dough is made in house daily. They use only high-quality ingredients for the toppings, this includes San Marzano tomatoes for the sauce, Fior di Latte Cheese, fresh basil and extra virgin olive oil. The Funghi is topped with button, cremini and portobello mushrooms, black olives and mascarpone. The Quattro Formaggi (White Style) pizza is made with olive oil. Mozzarella cheese, Fior di latte, goat cheese and Parmigiano. We recommend the Picante for a true taste of Italy – tomato sauce, Soppressata, Italian sausage, bacon, hot peppers and spicy olive oil. All pizzas are available to order on Uber Eats.

To the right of the entrance you can find the espresso bar where you can order espresso, lattes, cappuccino, americano, iced macchiato, iced matcha and more. Seasonal beverages are often available so be sure to ask the barista before you order. This season’s drink is…you guessed it! The Pumpkin Spiced Latte, order it to go or grab a seat and enjoy in house.

While you wait for your drink, we recommend perusing the speciality dessert counter. This is filled daily with an assortment of classic Italian desserts like cannoli’s (Sicilian and venetian), zeppole, baba yeast cakes, Sfogliateele (lobster tails), amaretti cookies and more. They also have a selection of squares, cupcakes, mini cheesecakes, macarons and tarts. The have seasonal sugar cookies that are hand decorated and make a perfect surprise gift for a porch drop-off. All desserts are made in house by their pastry chef. Gelato is available year-round and is a MUST try! There are over six different flavours to choose from with some vegan options as well.

SIB has a ton of grab-and-go items available; you can order a sandwich to go or pick-up a ready-made dinner from the freezer section. They now offer house-made lasagna, cannelloni, gnocchi, pastas and sauces. They will soon be offering seasonal soups in the prepared section.

When asked what they love most about being located on Ottawa Street? Nancy says “it is an amazing community to be a part of” over time she has noticed a shift in the demographic with a recent influx of young entrepreneurs and families from Toronto. That’s what makes it so interesting, says Nancy, things are always changing. Nancy grew up in East End Hamilton and remembers shopping for fabric with her mother on Ottawa Street as a young girl. Ottawa Street has come a long way, but the community strength will always remain the same. While Nancy has noticed a decline in her regular weekday lunch crowd since COVID hit, she is meeting a new clientele and is re-working the daily operations of the bakery to meet new needs.
