The Painted Bench
Opened in May 2014, The Painted Bench has been a part of our Ottawa Street family for over 7 years. If you’ve visited the street chances are you’ve stumbled into this fabulous shop. Located at the corner of Ottawa Street N and Britannia Ave this cozy shop has an English cottage like feel and is filled with beautiful vintage furniture that has been hand-picked by the owner. Best known for being stockist of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, the Painted Bench has a ton of offerings.
Whether you’re new to the world of chalk paint or a seasoned vet, owner Melanie Anderson is always available to offer a demo, discuss paint pairings, or to simply reminisce about the vibrant history of Hamilton and Ottawa Street. She and husband Chris grew up in Hamilton and raised a family in the Delta West neighbourhood.
Hamilton is home for the Anderson’s so it just made sense to open a business on Ottawa Street. Melanie and Chris have fond memories of Ottawa Street, Melanie remembers shopping for fabric with her mum as a young child, a skill she later adopted when making costumes for her daughter’s dance studio. Melanie and Chris spent their first date attending a movie at the old Avon Theatre on Ottawa Street. Times have certainly changed, but Melanie is happy with the direction the street is going in, she is hopeful to see new businesses open up to bring more life and diversity to the street.
Now back to the paint – this is the number one reason for opening their doors over 7 years ago. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint is known as the original and best furniture paint on the market. They carry all of Annie Sloan’s products and are one of a limited number of stockists in the area. If you are new to the world of chalk paint and are thinking of taking on a home project a series of workshops are available to teach you how to get started and to introduce you to the various product uses.
The Painted Bench also offers a wide selection of creative classes for everything from painted paddles to learning how to decoupage! Unfortunately, due to COVID these workshops are taking a bit of a hiatus, but Melanie is hopeful to see these classes resume with limited capacity sometime in the near future. To make up for the lack of hands on classes, Melanie put together take-home kits for those looking for a fun DIY project during quarantine. Sign, pillow covers, tray and tote bag kits are just a few examples of the DIY projects that are available for purchase at The Painted Bench or online at thepaintedbench.ca. The Painted Bench has just recently added Fusion Mineral Paint to their collection, this easy to use furniture paint comes in over 50 gorgeous colours, requires minimal prep and has a built in top coat leaving a classic matte finish – so no waxing is needed.
