Ottawa Street BIA

Small Business Matters

The Award of Excellence Program has been developed to honour individual BIA members for the vital contributions they make to our community. The BIA was asked to nominate two individuals that show an unparalleled commitment and dedication to the continual upkeep of their properties. We are lucky enough to have a street filled with business owners that share this same commitment to excellence. It's nearly impossible to narrow it down to just two. It's truly amazing to see a group of business owners so invested in their community, they believe that having pride in their business reflects positively on the surrounding neighbourhood and works to improve the environment in which we all live, work and play. We would like to extend another heartfelt congratulations to our BIA Excellence in Property Award winners Mike Pitton of Southern Smoke Barbecue House, and...

Celebrating Women on #IWD2016

International Women’s Day calls us to challenge the issues that deny women’s human rights, while celebrating those women who have worked tirelessly to create change in the past and also those who continue to move us forward today. Yesterday the Ottawa St merchants offered women the small gesture of a yellow rose to signify our utmost respect and appreciation for all women. Ottawa St is made up of over 100 small businesses, many of which are owned and operated by women. A great article was posted in the business section of the Spectator today stating that Hamilton women are still facing barriers when it comes to reaching ‘top jobs’. Fortunately we ranked 20th out of 25 of Canada’s biggest cities as the best place to be a woman. But we are not there yet. This is why International Women’s Day...

First week of Pan Am Food Central on Ottawa Street!!

Whew!!! Days 1 & 2 of Ottawa Street's Food Central Pan Am celebrations are all wrapped up, and we couldn't have had a better time! If you made it out, you got to enjoy food, live music, live pottery, and more! We're doing this whole thing daily 11pm to 8pm until July 26th, so don't miss out!! Here's what it was like…. Thought Beneath Film rocked the music tent on Saturday, and even Jed, the famous "Hamilton Dancing Man" came to boogie to their infectious pop rock sound! We also had the amazingly talented Chuck Coles hit the stage, right after we were wowed by Kirby (who stopped by to serenade Ottawa Street before jetting off to play another show - the man's a touring machine). We loved every minute! Our local restaurants brought their game faces for our Pan...

Dream Toy given to Once Again from a Generous Gentleman!

Marilyn from Once Again (249 Ottawa Street North) came by the BIA today with one awesome story! Last week, in the middle of the day a man named Russ came by her store with one very special item: a 1950's red toy pedal car, for free! "They didn't just donate a toy, they donated my dream toy!" Marilyn gushed. "People donate things all the time to corporations, it was so touching to have someone come in and be so generous with our shop. He said he liked the way we did business, that he had been in our store and wanted to keep this kind of business going, to keep it around." The tailgate was bent in, so Marilyn went into full resortation mode, flattened it out, took out a ding in the front right with a rubber mallet, and...

Something old is being made new again at The Painted Bench

Between curious knobs, fanciful pieces and versatile paint options for everything from fabric to wood and back again, it's easy to lose track of time at The Painted Bench, at 208 Ottawa Street North. "People get lost in here," admits Melanie Anderson, the owner of this DIY trove. You can often see Melanie riding her bike to work now that the weather has taken a turn towards beautiful and sunny, and the sidewalk outside the shop is a tempting assortment of charming colourful ladders, antique seats and rare phone desks. Inside, you can expect beautiful one of a kind items that would brighten any living space, like the coloured glass egg holders that would also double nicely as vintage apperetif shot glasses we saw today. Melanie also facilitates a lot of local learning from her shop. Coming up on June...

Granny’s Attic Treasures needs your help!

If you've spent time on Ottawa Street, you've likely been drawn into Granny's Attic Treasures at 186 Ottawa Street North. The small mom and pop retro shop is whimsical and full of unexpected vintage collectors items beckoning from the front window and sidewalk displays, inspiring bargain hunting relic lovers to bring a special item home forever, like a 50's kitchen set, tree trunk coffee tables, funky lights, gorgeous vintage crystal and even suitcase end tables. Gil and Kathy, behind this gem of a shop, need our help now! "Sadly, our 15 year old truck desperately needs either major work or to be replaced," they explain on their IndieGoGo campaign page. They are looking to raise a very reasonable $3,500 to get a new-to-them cargo truck, so they can continue to safely travel to acquire stock for the store. They need...
